IELTS Listening Test an overview & effective listening techniques

The IELTS listening test is one of the four skill tests in the IELTS Academic examination, an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English speakers. The IELTS Listening Test consists of four sections with progressively increasing difficulty levels. Each section is made up of 10 questions. For a paper-based test, candidates will have roughly 40 minutes to complete the whole section: 30 minutes for listening and 10 minutes for transferring the answers to an answer sheet. Meanwhile, the duration of the recheck for computer-based exams will be 2 minutes.

You will hear a number of different recordings, and you will have to answer questions about what you hear. There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work. All the recordings will be played only once. Test takers will lose marks for incorrect spelling and grammar. The listening sections will cover a wide range of topics as follows:

🎯Section 1 has a conversation between two speakers about every day, social situations (e.g. a conversation about travel arrangements)
🎯Section 2 has one person speaking about every day, social situations (e.g. a speech about local facilities).
🎯Section 3 is a conversation between two main speakers about educational and training situations (e.g. a discussion between two university students, perhaps guided by a tutor)
🎯Section 4 has one person speaking about an academic subject.

Each section begins with a short introduction, telling the test taker about the situation and the speakers. Then they have some time to look through the questions. The questions are in the same order as the information in the recording, so the answer to the first question will be before the answer to the second question, and so on. The first three sections have a break in the middle, allowing test takers to look at the remaining questions. Bear in mind that each section is heard only once, so focus on listening.
